Helping students study from home

How Wendy Chan helped provide tablets, Wi-Fi devices for low-income students in Hong Kong.

Students from some low-income families often have to borrow their parents’ mobile phones during lockdown to access homework and collaborate with teachers.

Wendy Chan, a senior director in valuations at JLL in Hong Kong, decided she could help make this period a bit easier for them.

"While we have the privilege to maintain some semblance of normality by working or studying from home, many lack the resources to carry on," she says.

Wendy has long volunteered at Sowers Action, a Hong Kong-based NGO, which has been running a computer donation project for local students. She organized donations to purchase tablets, and also reached out to JLL clients China Telecom and ZTE, which both donated portable Wi-Fi devices and SIM cards loaded with data.

Wendy and her colleagues recently visited the homes of students of Shamshuipo Kaifong Welfare Association Primary School to distribute the resources and help them get all set up.

“My hope is these tablets and Wi-Fi access will give these students a much happier learning experience.”
